A Room of One's Own

My daughter just asked me what kind of bedroom I would like if "Extreme Home Makeover" remodeled a house for us.

I told her that I want my bedroom to look like a library. I want floor-to-ceiling bookshelves covering the walls, and on those bookshelves would be hundreds of old-fashioned leatherbound books. None of them would be moldy.

My bed would be a canopy bed with opaque draperies, so I could go in there and nest.

One of the bookshelves would rotate at the touch of a button to let me into my secret writing alcove, where I would keep my computer desk and my research files. In the secret alcove would be an intercom so my family could communicate with me. But if I chose, I could turn off the intercom for long periods while I wrote.

Can anyone say INTROVERT? LOL!

What would your ideal bedroom look like?

I'm with you on that one you described, but I will remove the canopy...just to maintain man points.

Books ... Yes!! I already have some there, stacked beside the bed and sometimes hidden beside a dresser (which my wife reminds me to remove). Are you writing from Pepperdine?

I'm writing from Barstow, California. The wonders of modern technology allow me to access the internet from our van.

Wow, that does sound perfect (though I have to agree with Travis on the canopy. Man points and all).

And I think introverts make the best writers.

You know what's really sad?

I'm reading your response and thinking, "That would be such a pain to dust every week."

Can we say obsessive-compulsive? Yeah, that's me. :-)

I'd want a room with a giant TV screen, workout equipment and an indoor swimming pool.

I have a separate office for my writing. My husband and I have an agreement about our bedroom: No outside distractions allowed.

OMG I'm with you too! Wall to wall books, secret spot....SWEET!

Oh, but I'd have to have a monster music system piped in....when I'm writing those action scenes, I need pump up music. :-)

Yeah, no canopy for me either.

Great post!

How cool, Rosslyn! In a way I'm picturing that scene in "Beauty and the Beast" when he give her his library.
I'd want the bookshelves and books you described, but in a room like I have now. We've made our bedroom to be like a Texas mountain cabin, if that makes any sense, and I love it. Adding the bookshelves (and more space overall) would make it perfect to me. Ooooh, wait: add a fireplace, too, where I could roast marshmallows and cook hot dogs.

Oops, I mean "gave her his library."
