As I consider what sports would suit my daughter, I have to take her size into account.
She's her mother's daughter. She's a wee, puny thing--always the smallest in her class, and fragile-boned like a bird. She can play sports like soccer while she's young, but she won't be able to do as well at them when she's older, and brawny brutes begin to dominate the field. Trust me, I'm speaking from experience.
Dance is a good choice, because it isn't size-dependent. (I know, it's not really a sport, but at least it's exercise!)
Archery has already attracted her interest, thanks to the archers at the Celtic Festival. We'll look into archery when she's big enough to handle a bow.
Horseback riding is another one in which you can be small and still succeed.
Any other ideas? Keep in mind that she likes to win. The sport most likely to hold her interest will be one in which she can do well despite her size and relative lack of strength.

My Madeline is literally the second or third smallest 10 year old at our school.....she DOMINATES the basketball court on defense, against players twice her size. She is bird boned as well....and broke her wrist...but that was randomly walking across the playground...not on the B-ball court....
in the long run, size does help in B-ball...but Maddie is like Seabiscuit....tiny and mighty.
i will also say...there are some children's track clubs around town, and swim teams do start with kids Brook's age....and she is not too small for either of those sports...and they are NON CONTACT!
Swimming.
Best sport ever [smile]. And size and body type don't matter too much.

I agree. Swimming is a good choice.
If it was a choice for ME, I'd study fencing. Probably not a good idea for a 6 year old, though!
What about long distance running? They are usually smaller..... Swimming, too, if she can develop the arm strength. I'm partial to road - biking, myself.
She'll find something, or better yet, something'll find her (that's how biking found me).
Good luck!
I agree with Luke and Travis.
Swimming would be a good choice.
And like Lynn said, distance running. My daughter is the same way -- puny-13-year-old-blow-away-in-the-wind -- and she LOVES cross country running.
Hmm.. There's gymnastics and figure skating. (Smaller size is an advantage in those sports, but it's kind of expensive)
I was a fast pitch softball pitcher and loved it. Hand/eye coordination was more important than muscles.
Like everyone else said, swimming is fun and healthy.
You could always put her in karate. Those little outfits are adorable. :)
Thanks, everyone!
I used to run cross-country. It was fun, even though I never won. That's one of the sports in which just finishing is an achievement.
Swimming is fun, but when I think about those huge seal-flippers on Michael Phelps, I know my little girl's dainty hands won't scoop a lot of water. But whatever she likes will be fine with me!
Light and small bodies skim the top of the water...she'll do fine...it's more about momentum and physics..each swimmer figures out there own best way to work with their body. She could swim...i promise....i was always small, and asthmatic...and swimming was great for me....as was track and cross country.
How about tennis? Natalie started a couple of months ago and loves it. I'll give you all the info (where/when) the next time we meet :)
