Music Class

Just for fun: here's a shot of my Sunday music class students doing the Filipino dance called the "Tinikling." In the authentic dance, they use heavy bamboo poles, not little sticks. When the poles clash together, beware, little ankles!

A strong 1-2-3 beat makes this dance a great tool for teaching rhythm to kids.

We lived in the Philippines for a few years when I was about eight years old. I have fond memories of our one trip to a resort in the mountains. The adults drank rice wine and I danced the Tinikling. I later rejoiced when a nasty monkey on a chain pulled my brother's hair.

:-)

Have you traveled overseas? Where would you like to go?

I have never attempted a trip to Europe. I'd love to visit the places my grandfathers help make safe...
While I'm there, I want to visit Yorkshire, England, for a brief glimpse at my historical roots. Although my family has been in the States since the 1600s, I'm still interested in our English heritage.

I went to Viequis with my parents when I was younger. (It's a small island off Puerto Rico.) Not sure if that counts or not, but that's the furthest I've ever been ;)

I'd really like to go to England and tour those houses from my favorite Jane Austin films. Like the cottage from the latest Sense and Sensibilty film, and Pemberley from the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice. . .and maybe the house they used for Rosings Park (The fireplace in the drawing room alone exceeded 800 pounds- gotta love Mr. Collins :)

Anyways, it would be fun to tour the castles in Ireland while we're at it!

Rosslyn, I haven't seen tinikling in years! We did it in P.E. in elementary school; that was so much fun. Thanks for the memory.

I've been to England, but one week only whetted my appetite. I want to spend more time all over Great Britain. I also want to see pretty much all of Europe. Besides England, Ireland, and Scotland, Germany holds most of my family heritage.

Rachel, you cracked me up about the fireplace. Mr. Collins would be so proud.

NICE picture.

I've only been to the Caymen Islands...but hope to visit England and Paris in 2010...God willing.

Thanks for sharing.

So, my best friend in all the world is Fillipino....but even though her parents are first generation immigrants, and all her relatives are still overseas....she is so very Americanized....that on her trips back, she has funny observations. She doesn't really like the exotic foods....give that girl a cheeseburger instead. She says that all her relatives homes are covered in mildewy plant vegetation...inside and out! And her favorite part is going to the flee markets for cheap American knock off products and dvds! She goes back for extended trips about every year or two. Her family were connected with the politics of days gone by....Emelda Marcos (not sure on spelling?) and that group....and were at one point very wealthy...and are now just faded versions of their wealth....it's interesting to talk to my friend about her travels "home". I am these days hankering for a british isles excursion....Ireland, Scotland and England....

Amy, I'm also dreaming of a trip to the UK. My daughter's obsession with Scotland is making things worse. :-) Tonight we looked at a picture book about Scotland and I mentally drooled at the pictures of Edinburgh.
