Searching for Less

Here are several New Year's resolutions of mine:

Give myself more mental space and time to contemplate and appreciate God.
Write more.
Exercise more.
Engage in more educational and fun activities with my daughter in after-school hours.
Plan meals more efficiently.
Do housework in a more organized and consistent manner that doesn't interfere with my writing time.

Can you see the problem? It's always more, and never less.

It's sometimes possible to meet more than one objective while engaging in certain activities. For example, I can find contemplative time in Holy Yoga while exercising. Writing is also a meditative activity.

Nonetheless (couldn't resist that pun), there will have to be a less somewhere in my life. I look forward to slimming down my priorities and focusing on these things that matter most.

This year, will there be something you resolve to do less?

You're right. it's always about doing something more, more, more, isn't it.

Hmmm, what to do less of:
I hope to worry less. I insult God so often by trying to worry about things beyond my control.

Oh and to eat less. I stink at portion control when it comes to junk food. **smile**

I think you were peeking at my list of resolutions. The only difference in my list is write more efficiently. (But I'm not sure that's a possibility with two kids and a husband.)

I understand where you are coming from in wanting to slim down priorities. There are times that my cravings for organization become so overwhelming I want to cry.

Good luck with your resolutions!

I used to do resolutions, then decided to call them by a different name since I never kept them. Goals. What are my goals for the new year? 1. To know the Lord more deeply through times of meditation and study. 2. Relax my need to make plans a long way ahead and live life one day at a time. 3. Be grateful every moment. When I think a negative--turn it into a positive. These are the kinds of goals I want in my life now. One goal I never seem to be able to keep is the one about exercise. I can only hope I'll do it more.

Many of my goals have been reachable and by the end of the year I can look back and see where I've come.

I hope you meet yours, but in case you don't, make one more resolution. Don't worry about it!

Oh, Rosslyn...do I need less. Since I began writing, I can only stick to the basics of the basics. Here's what I do:

1. Love God, read his Word daily, seek His will always.
2. Love and care for my husband
3. Love and care for my children
4. Teach music. Full time.
5. Write. Study writing. Stay in touch with writer friends.
6. Exercise at least three times a week

All of the above are callings, blessings, or basic caretaking. I have no time for anything else, but I'm not complaining. On the contrary, I can't thank God enough for the abundant life He's given me through Christ. My NY resolution is to stick to the "basics" above, and cull all junk away. If I can do that, I know I'll have a great year. :)

Happy 2009!

Ahh... less. That is a challenge. Things I need to do less:

1. Watch TV. I am not anti-TV, but my husband and I have decided that we will pick a couple of shows we will watch consistently and keep the mindless-monster off the rest of the time. (or most of the rest of the time.) :) Somehow our precious evening hours are so quickly filled with NOTHING.

2. Facebook. Enough said!

My resolutions:
*Get up at a set time. I am an night-owl/ morning-sleeper by nature, but my son is not! My mornings are so much more organized if I can get myself together at a regular time! This also requires going to BED. Arrg.

*Exercise. We used to be avid walkers, and the kids have turned us into couch potatoes. We are planning to tackle "Body for Life."

*Start writing - Nathan has been bugging me that I need to write the book that's in my head, and between him and your excellent example, I am surely going to try! Thanks for the inspiration!
