Angels or Monsters?

Out of the blue, my five-year-old daughter asked: "Mom, are you an angel or a monster, a good guy or a villain?"

Me: (Laughing) "I'm an angel and a good guy. Where did you hear that?"

Daughter: "It was on Heroes. It said "Angels and Monsters, Good Guys and Villains."

We don't allow our daughter to watch Heroes, which is far too gory and dark for children. My husband was recording it on DVR the other day, and she must have noticed the episode title before we switched it off.

Someday when she's older, I might explain that most of us are part angel and part monster, and our job is to feed the angel and starve the monster. But I won't go into that just yet.

This is sooooo true. I'm in a constant battle.

I really, really try to starve my monster. Unfortunately, he and I have the same weakness -- chocolate. :-)

NICE POST.... part angel and part monster. Never heard it presented like that, but you're right, it's so true.

Kat, you crack me up--same weakness--chocolate. LOL

This is a very interesting post! I know you are familiar with Gilbert/Gubar's argument that women have been unfairly viewed as either angels or monsters in modern Western literature. For me, to call us all (men and women) part angel and part monster is egalitarian, but also very dramatic. Sometimes I agree with this point of view. Most of the time, though, I think we are trying to transcend our (moral) identities as grubby little people and to become somewhat shinier, somewhat bigger people. I know you know which author informed my views on this one!--K

Kat - LOL! Mine likes caffeine.

LK - I usually agree more with the grubbier/shinier description, too (and it's the word "grubby" that gives away the author) -but don't deny me my dramatic metaphor. :-)

This reminds me of the story of the little boy watching a white dog and a black dog fighting. He asked his grandpa which dog will win the fight. Grandpa replies, "The dog you feed the most will win the fight."
